我們坐在客廳的沙發上，想著世界，看著窗戶
We were sitting in the living room on the sofa, the wrong way round, looking out the window.
萬籟俱寂。這時我們看到了Elvis，他站在馬路對面的停車場旁，一邊是輛郵車
It was quiet, and then in the car park across the road we saw Elvis - look, there beside the postmans van,
他繞著這輛郵車轉悠，打量著車門

好像他是打算進去，但是郵遞員回來了，他倉惶跑掉了
and he was walking round the postmans van, looking in the open door.
穿過了窗戶，下了樓梯，緊接著到了頭，停在看門人的辦公室前

他重重地捶向了長廊
He looked as if he was thinking about getting in, but then the postman came back, and he swaggered off,
也就是從此，在我們搬進這所新房之後，每晚七八點左右都能聽到那陣聲音從門後面傳過來

如果我們把門上了鎖，Elvis就會站在門前，等著門開
walked past the window and down the stairs, and then at the bottom of the stairs right by the caretakers office,
他會在客廳裡走來走去，不時坐在哪張椅子上，或者徑直坐在地上
he started licking the pavement.
他不常開口，只呆個把小時，看著電視

我們之間交流不多，大約十點，他就會走，到第二天傍晚才會再來
Every night now since we moved in that new house theres this noise outside the door at just about half seven or eight o clock every night.
這間房子外面的巷子幽深錯雜，因為我們畢竟住在市中心
And if we go and look outside the door, Elvisll be standing there waiting to be let in.

這還有很多松鼠和鳥兒，Stuart還說他那次去第一大道
And then he wanders into the living room, maybe sits down on one of the chairs or even lies down on the floor.
跳過小路柵欄的時候，看到了九隻狐狸

外出散步的時候，你都不知道自己已經出來了一周時間，更不知道在哪
He doesnt say much, he just stays there for an hour or two, watching the TV.
接著搜尋又是個難題

我想這也許就是為什麼他在那呆了那麼久，又住了那麼久，不過也可能是出於松鼠的緣故
We talk to him a bit, and then around ten o clock, hell go away again, and not come back until the next night.
我在某處讀到過，他很喜歡松鼠

我們有準備兩隻視頻作新婚禮物，名字是e-files
Theres a lot of lanes and stuff around here, around the house - although its right in the middle of the city
e-files一號和e-files二號講的主要是證明Elvis還活著的明證
it seems quite like the country, its dead hidden - safe I suppose, made for night living.
有一次，他來的時候我們正在看其中一隻，但是他什麼都沒說，只坐在躺椅裡

他把玩著衣服領口，我們則專心致志地看完了視頻
Theres a lot of squirrels and birds, and Stuart says hes seen about nine foxes there
他突然站了起來，走進了霧裡，一言不發地

他再來的時候，我什麼也沒說，因為也不知道說什麼
when hes jumped over the fence on his way to Priors Road.
Karen和他聊了很多，就好像懂得也比我多

但是他行為很古怪，他會走到雜物間裡，打量著
Sometimes you can go out walking, and when youve been out for a wee while even you dont know where you are anymore,
他不時撿起一些東西，把玩一兩週，但還是一言不發
so it would be pretty hard for anyone else to find you.
真是沒有禮貌

於是我就看著Karen怎麼做，聽聽她對他說什麼，諸如此類
I suppose thats why he spends so much time there, thats why hes come to live there, or maybe its just the squirrels.
沒過多久，我就學會了這一套，試著和他聊
I read about somewhere that he likes squirrels quite a lot.
倒也沒有被被他的回答或緘默煩到

我記得第一次和他交談是在二樓上，我跟他說要講講我和Karen的故事

因為我覺得他可能會注意到我們在這住這一點，畢竟他造訪得太頻繁了

我琢磨著也許他還不知道這是什麼意思
And one time when he came round we were watching one of those, but he didnt say anything he just sat on the armchair.
於是我就和他捋了一遍
He was playing with his collar a bit , and we watched it right through and then when it finished
首先是我們第一次聽說對方，接著是第一次見面
he just got up and walked off into the mist and didnt say anything.
然後是我們的七週年紀念

一切都很順利，也包括隨後的蜜月
The first few times he came round I didnt speak to him at all, I wasnt really sure what to say .

這也就是我們怎麼住到這的故事了。我曾經還以為Elvis是我爸，但我從沒和他說過
And Karen spoke to him quite a lot - she seemed to know what to do more than I do.
也沒和我爸說過...
He had quite a strange manner though, hed go into your stuff and look through it,

then hed maybe pick something up and play with it for a wee while, but hed never make any comment about any of it.
Seemed pretty rude to me.

I just watched whatever Karen did, and listened to how she talked to him and then,
after a while I started to copy that, and tell him a few things,

not really bothered about whether he responded or said anything back or not.

I think the first time I spoke to him we were sitting up on the mezzanine and I said that I would tell him about me and wee Karen,
and how it was that wed come to be living there.
I thought he probably liked the fact that we were living there because he came round so much,
so I thought he might want to know how it was that it came about.

We did it all over backwards, I told him.

First of all we got to know each other, and then a while after that we met,

and when wed known each other for about seven years we decided to have an anniversary,

and that went quite well, so after the anniversary we had a honeymoon, and that went well too,

so after that we decided that we would get married.

Thats why were living there now. I used to think my dad was Elvis , but I havent told him that yet.
I havent told my dad either...
